You should know: Contrary to popular belief, dry hair does not lack oil - most of us produce enough natural oil (sebum) to keep our hair healthy. What dry hair lacks is water (moisture). Open cuticles along the hair shaft allow moisture to escape into the air, resulting in dry hair with short-lived sheen.

Causes:

Dry hair can be the result of a vitamin-deficient diet, as well as several other factors that can expose cuticles and make hair prone to dryness, including:

  • U.V. rays (sun, lights, tanning beds)
  • Rough combing or brushing, especially on wet hair
  • Chemical processing
  • Thermal styling
  • Use of wrong styling and shine enhancing products

Solutions:

To combat dry hair, you want to seal the cuticle and restore moisture. You can help your hair retain moisture by following these recommendations:

  • Don't overlap chemical processes before the recommended time
  • Never brush wet or damp hair. Use a wide-tooth comb instead
  • Use a low or ammonia-free hair color
  • Limit your dependency on thermal styling appliances. Wrap or roller set hair instead
  • Use a clarifying shampoo after swimming
