You should know: Abusing hair with multiple processes, such as improperly or too frequently relaxing and coloring, coupled with excessive heat from thermal styling is the most common cause of breakage. Hair that's prone to breakage needs to be strengthened with essential proteins and relieved of stress.

Causes:

Hair breakage is often the result of our own improper hair care practices, including:

  • Frequent and/or multiple Chemical processes like relaxing, permanent coloring and permanent waving
  • Constant pulling of hair caused by hair extensions and too-tight ponytails and braids
  • Rough combing and brushing
  • Overuse of thermal styling tools

Solutions:

To reduce breakage it's important to follow proper hair care maintenance practices. You can improve your hair's strength and prevent breakage by following these recommendations:

  • Use covered elastic hair ties and rubber-tipped bobby pins
  • Wrap hair in a satin scarf or sleep on a satin pillowcase
  • Don't repeat chemical applications before the recommended time
  • Properly neutralize and rinse all chemical residue from hair after processing
  • Opt for semi-permanent or demi-permanent hair coloring processes
  • Use a leave-in conditioner to balance moisture
