You should know: A common misconception is that oily hair is caused by an oily scalp. But, dry scalp can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, and once on the scalp this excess oil transfers down the hair shaft. Sebum (oil), bacteria and dirt can also wrap around your hair's root, limiting its ability to absorb essential nutrients for healthy hair and scalp.

Causes:

Oily hair can be hereditary or caused by improper product use, as well as other factors including:

  • Overactive sebaceous glands caused by dry scalp
  • Over conditioning
  • Styling product build-up
  • Use of heavy oils and finishing products

Solutions:

You can manage oily hair with these recommendations:

  • Concentrate a clarifying shampoo on the hair away from the scalp to remove excess oil
  • Always rinse hair thoroughly since residue can exacerbate oily hair
  • Avoid using high gloss or shine products
  • Don't brush hair too frequently because this will deposit oil from the scalp along the hair shaft
  • Opt for a light leave-in conditioner
  • Look for hair products that contain chamomile, sage, eucalyptus, jojoba, rosemary or tea tree oil
